In modern architectural design, the desire for large glass areas in the exterior wall has stimulated the use of prefabricated panels in curtain wall that are simply building skins with no load-bearing characteristics. Extruded aluminum or steel sections(called mullions) similar to I beams are placed over the frame. Between these mullions, windows and spandrel panels of aluminum, structural glass, marble, or precast concrete are attached. The spandrel panel is located between the head of one window and the sill of the window above.

Il y a trois parties bien distinctes dans une fenêtre : 1- la partie inférieure, qui est presque toujours horizontale et qu'on appelle mur d'appui ou simplement appui; 2- les deux parties latérales, qui sont le plus souvent verticales et auxquelles on donne les noms de jambages, de pieds-droits, de montants, et quelquefois de dosserets; 3- la partie supérieure, dite linteau ou traverse, qui consiste en une pièce de bois, de béton, de pierre, de fer, etc., posée horizontalement sur les pieds-droits et destinée à supporter la maçonnerie placée au-dessus.
