... the first truly successful diamond simulant, "cubic zirconia. "Also known by the acronym "CZ, ""cubic zirconia" is zirconium dioxide that is synthesized in a laboratory. The "cubic" part of the name indicates that the zirconia has been produced to form in cubic crystals, like diamond. This is not typical for zirconia-its stable form is monoclinic crystals... [This figure] shows the design chosen for a CANDU fuel bundle. This bundle, used in all routine fuelling of CANDU reactors, is called CANLUB fuel.... The bundle... is mostly uranium dioxide(UO2), sheathed and held together by zircaloy. Zircaloy 4, the specific alloy used for this purpose, is 98% zirconium and 1. 7% tin. The UO2 is in the form of high-density pellets. Each fuel element is a thin zircaloy tube, the fuel sheath, filled with fuel pellets.
