Disclosed herein is a zirconium alloy nuclear fuel cladding tube for use in nuclear fuel rods of a nuclear reactor. The nuclear fuel cladding tube comprises an elongated hollow metal tube for accommodating a nuclear fuel and a metal oxide film formed on the outer surface of the metal tube wherein the metal is a zirconium alloy and the oxide film has a thickness of 0. 5~3. 7 µm.

A fuel rod for a nuclear reactor fuel assembly includes a cladding tube and a plurality of fuel pellets contained in the tube and composed of fissile material, such as uranium dioxide, having a single enrichment of U-235. At least some of the fuel pellets have an annular configuration. Some of the annular fuel pellets have an annulus of a first size, whereas other ... annular fuel pellets have an annulus of a second size different from the first size.

The crystallographic textures of zirconium alloy tubing used as cladding in nuclear reactor fuel are commonly characterized by the quantitative texture numbers F(Källström) and flower case r(Kearns) which are derived from the direct and inverse pole figures. The texture numbers of zircaloy 2 and 4 tubes have been correlated experimentally with the value of the contractile strain ratio R which is a measure of the plastic anisotropy of the tube.

[This figure] shows the design chosen for a CANDU fuel bundle. This bundle, used in all routine fuelling of CANDU reactors, is called CANLUB fuel.... The bundle... is mostly uranium dioxide(UO2), sheathed and held together by zircaloy. Zircaloy 4, the specific alloy used for this purpose, is 98% zirconium and 1. 7% tin. The UO2 is in the form of high-density pellets. Each fuel element is a thin zircaloy tube, the fuel sheath, filled with fuel pellets. A thin lubricating layer of graphite between the pellet and the sheath is what gives the fuel the proprietary name CANLUB.
