Absolute poverty is measured by comparing a person's total income against the total cost of purchasing a specific basket of goods and services representing the essentials of daily life. People with inadequate income to purchase this basket of items are considered to be living in absolute poverty.

La pauvreté absolue est la conception la plus restrictive de la pauvreté. Elle est sous-tendue par la notion de minimum vital selon laquelle il existerait des besoins strictement incompressibles (nourriture, vêtements, logement, etc.) dont la satisfaction serait indispensable à la survie de l'individu. La méthode consiste alors à convertir en équivalent monétaire la valeur du panier de biens correspondant à ces besoins et de considérer comme pauvre toute personne ne disposant pas de ce minimum de ressources.
