Des couples de petits projecteurs et de cellules photo-électriques sont disposés sur le pourtour de l'enceinte où vivent les souris, le terrarium. Chaque rupture de rayons donne une impulsion, laquelle agit sur un compteur. Le compteur est automatiquement photographié toutes les heures. Cela donne des "actogrammes" exprimant l'activité des souris.
