Adsorption: The property of a liquid or solid to retain on, or concentrate at, its surface one or more components (atoms, molecules, or ions) from another solid, liquid, or gas in contact with the surface. Adsorption is a characteristic surface or interface phenomenon, a fundamental physicochemical property of solids and liquids.

OBS

"Adsorbate" sometimes refers to a substance which has already been adsorbed, whereas the term adsorptive is restricted to the substance which can be adsorbed under given conditions.

L'adsorption est la fixation d'un ion ou d'une molécule de grosseur variable, dit adsorbé, à la surface d'une molécule ou d'un complexe moléculaire appelé adsorbant. Il s'agit donc d'un phénomène de surface, qu'il ne faut pas confondre avec l'absorption dans laquelle l'ion ou la molécule pénètre à l'intérieur du complexe moléculaire.

Dans ce cas de désorption à la vapeur d'eau, l'adsorbant restant humide doit être séché par un courant de gaz chaud, puis refroidi avant d'être réutilisé. Cependant, si le gaz à adsorber possède une adsorbabilité nettement supérieure à celle de l'eau, on peut remettre en œuvre l'adsorbant humide, car, durant l'adsorption, l'adsorbat à fixer provoquera la désorption de l'eau et, de plus, la chaleur consommée par cette désorption compensera de façon appréciable la chaleur d'adsorption de l'adsorbat, ce qui limitera l'élévation de température dans la phase d'adsorption.
