In 1998 and 1999, the Agriculture and Agri-Food Table on Climate Change was established as part of a federal-provincial-industry effort to recommend options on how the agriculture and agri-food sectors can mitigate their GHG (Greenhouse Gas) emissions or enhance carbon sinks. The Table provided informed leadership to identify and analyze GHG reduction opportunities. It developed a Foundation Paper that provides an analytical base for the development of options to address GHG emissions, and an Options Paper with recommendations on the GHG mitigation strategies for the sector. En 1998 et en 1999, la Table de l'agriculture et de l'agroalimentaire sur le changement climatique a été mise sur pied dans un effort concerté entre le gouvernement fédéral, les provinces et l'industrie pour recommander des solutions permettant au secteur de l'agriculture et de l'agroalimentaire de limiter ses émissions de GES (gaz à effet de serre) ou d'accroître les puits de carbone. Grâce au leadership dont elle a fait preuve, la Table a permis de déterminer et d'analyser les possibilités de réduction des GES. Les membres ont élaboré un document de base fournissant le soutien analytique nécessaire à l'élaboration d'options visant à contrôler les émissions de GES et un rapport sur les options comprenant des recommandations sur les stratégies d'atténuation des GES dans le secteur.
