The hypothesis of the mechanism of isostasy, proposed by George Bedell Airy, that postulates an equilibrium of crustal blocks of the same density but of different size; thus the topographically higher mountains would be of the same density as other crustal blocks but would have greater mass and deeper roots.

(...) G.-B. Airy en 1885 (...) a fait l'hypothèse que les roches de la surface se comportent comme une série de billes de bois de différents diamètres mais d'égale densité, flottant sur de l'eau. Plus la bille est grande, plus elle s'élèvera, puisque chacune déplace son propre poids d'eau. Airy a supposé que la croûte est constituée de blocs de même densité mais d'épaisseur variable flottant sur un substrat plus dense.
