En 1989, Vogelstein et al. ont montré qu'une étude systématique des pertes alléliques d'une tumeur comprenant un nombre suffisant de marqueurs informatifs (sujet hétérozygote pour le marqueur) permettait de fournir une caractérisation du génotype tumoral appelée allélotype. La notion d'allélotype initialement appliquée aux tumeurs colorectales a été étendue à d'autres tumeurs solides.
