Cette «Demoiselle des glaces» a été découverte sur le plateau Ukok des monts Altaï, situé à environ 2 500 m d’altitude. Vivant à l’époque de la culture Pazyryk (scythe) de la fin du Ve siècle avant Jésus-Christ, elle avait environ 25 ans à sa mort. On l’appelle aussi la Princesse Ukok en raison du raffinement des objets trouvés dans sa tombe, et du fait qu’elle en était la seule occupante – la femme partage habituellement la tombe d’un homme. Sa momie aussi était tatouée et des armes étaient placées à ses côtés, ce qui a donné lieu à l’hypothèse d’une princesse guerrière, ou même d’une Amazone.
