Positioning of the SOFIA telescope is based on spherical sensors (position sensitive devices, PSDs), located at the bearing, and an high resolution inertial three laser gyro system, which is updated regularly by the focal plane tracker camera. The gyros were specially developed for SOFIA to provide extremely low drift rates and noise.
