A structure for conveying a canal over a river or hollow.

CONT

The ancients had no materials available to withstand high pressures, so they had to content themselves with masonry aqueducts following the hydraulic grade line, with aqueduct bridges across valleys.

OBS

In general usage only, "aqueduct" can mean "aqueduct bridge".

L'invention majeure de l'architecture romaine dans ce domaine est celle du pont-aqueduc qui permet à la conduite d'enjamber non seulement une vallée, mais de très larges plaines. Cette invention a été rendue possible par le développement de la construction en arcades, liée elle-même à l'emploi systématique de la maçonnerie de blocage.

A conduit designed to convey water from a source to a point, usually a reservoir, where distribution begins.

CONT

The major supply conduits, or feeders, from the source to the distribution system are called mains or aqueducts.

OBS

"Aqueduct" is the only term which refers strictly to the mains that feed into the distribution reservoir. The other terms refer equally to pre- and post-reservoir conduits, and therefore to elements of either the waterworks or distribution system.

In a nonpressure aqueduct, water moves downhill under the force of gravity. Ancient aqueducts were usually of the nonpressure type.

OBS

Closed conduits, such as aqueducts, pipelines, and tunnels, may also follow the hydraulic grade line, in which case they are called grade structures, or they may operate under pressure.

OBS

Aqueduct. ... In ordinary usage, ... the term is applied to large arched structures of masonry conveying water by gravitation, ... and the earliest aqueducts ... had therefore to be built on the hydraulic gradient, i.e. the slope at which the water would flow freely.
