Peristomes are of two fundamentally different types, nematodontous, which arefound only in Polytrichopsida and Tetraphidopsida, and arthrodontous ... arthrodontous peristomes, found in the rest of stegocarpous mosses, consist at maturity only of remnants of paired, periclinal cell walls.
