A brown to black solid or semi-solid bituminous substance occurring in nature, but also obtained as the residue from the refining of certain petroleums and then known as artificial asphalt.

OBS

In America the term [asphalt] is used both for the naturally occurring product and that obtained from the distillation of petroleum. Elsewhere the artificial asphalt is usually called bitumen.

Petroleum asphalt is produced in all consistencies from light road oils to heavy, high-viscosity industrial types.

The solid hydrocarbons may be subdivided into four main groups: petroleum bitumens, pyrobitumens, disseminated bitumens and oxygen-bearing bitumens. The petroleum bitumens can be subdivided into the asphaltic bitumens and the mineral waxes.

There are some fifty different types of petroleum bitumen, each intended for a specific range of applications.
