CONT

Scientists report in Wednesday's edition of the journal Nature Genetics that they have created the first functioning, artificial human chromosome. The new technology, developed by researchers from Case Western Reserve University and Athersys Inc., may eventually provide a way to cure inherited diseases by altering the cell's genetic structure. Athersys officials say they would like to use artificial chromosomes as a way to package treatments for diseases affecting the immune system, such as AIDS, as well as blood disorders such as sickle cell anemia.

CONT
