Este alga se caracteriza por poseer gran tamaño, pudiendo alcanzar más de un metro. Tiene un color pardo verdoso oscuro y una forma acintada, presentando a intervalos vesículas aeriferas de gran tamaño. Tiene unas ramificaciones muy pequeñas que le salen a ambos lados del fronde. Se encuentra en el nivel litoral medio, con F. Vesiculosus o ligeramente inferior, compitiendo con este alga en zonas protegidas que es donde más se desarrolla, desapareciendo en zonas batidas.
