Le terme d'«asphyxie» était employé communément pour désigner l'état d'une personne dont la ventilation est arrêtée. Actuellement, il englobe toutes les détresses respiratoires, c.-à-d. tous les états d'un sujet chez lequel l'oxygène n'arrive pas en quantité normale au niveau des tissus. Il peut s'agir : - d'un arrêt ventilatoire ou circulatoire; - d'une atteinte de l'appareil ventilatoire, soit par une obstruction des voies aériennes supérieures (langue, oedème laryngé, corps étranger, sang, vomissements, mucosités, etc.) ou inférieures (noyade, pneumonie, insuffisance respiratoire chronique), soit par des lésions de la cage thoracique [...]; - d'une atteinte de l'appareil circulatoire par un état de choc [...]; d'une atteinte neurologique [...]; - d'une respiration en atmosphère confinée ou de l'inhalation d'un gaz toxique.
