Two broad lines of exploration are looking at the fighter engine of the 1990s, one aimed at the variable cycle and the other at the so-called dry turbojet. Two hardware programs, the Advanced Turbine Engine Gas Generator (ATEGG) and Advanced Propulsion System Integrator (APSI) are producing sub-assemblies that might, at some stage, be brought together in a single new engine.
