One of the results of this federal-provincial co-operation has been the creation of the Atlantic Salmon Co-ordinating Committee, a body composed of federal and provincial deputy ministers of fisheries, administrators, and scientists. This group formulates policy for recommendation to governments and decides on research and management programs. The practical work, in turn, is carried out by a scientific sub-committee, a unit made up of scientists of the federal and provincial departments concerned with fisheries and of the Fisheries Research Board.

Au mois d'avril 1949, le Ministère a offert sa coopération aux provinces du littoral de l'Atlantique en vue de restaurer la pêche au saumon. Des représentants du Québec, de la Nouvelle-Écosse, du Nouveau-Brunswick, de l'Île-du-Prince-Édouard et de Terre-Neuve ont rencontré des fonctionnaires du Ministère à Ottawa afin de discuter l'opportunité de tracer un tel programme ainsi que les meilleurs moyens de l'exécuter. Par la suite, le Comité de coordination du saumon atlantique a été créé.
