The employer must make sure that a hazard assessment is performed before workers enter a confined space. Part of this assessment involves testing the atmosphere. Atmosphere testing is required before entry, during entry, and continuously throughout entry depending on the hazards and risks present. Atmospheric testing is typically required to determine the presence of: toxic gases – various chemical or biological substances[;] flammable or explosive gases[;] oxygen – too much (enrichment) or too little (deficiency)[.]
