On a aujourd'hui de bonnes raisons de penser que le nouveau dépérissement forestier est provoqué par des matières polluantes transportées par l'atmosphère (matières polluants atmogènes), principalement le dioxyde de soufre (SO2), les oxydes d'azote (NOx), l'ozone (O3) et [...] les matières carboniques.

À l'origine, «airborne» se distinguait de «atmospheric» parce qu'il possédait une nuance relative au déplacement dans l'atmosphère. De plus en plus, maintenant, ces deux épithètes sont considérés comme de parfaits synonymes, et «airborne» tend même à disparaître au profit de «atmospheric». On l'utilisera (de même que l'équivalent correspondant «aéroporté») lorsqu'on jugera nécessaire de faire ressortir le sens de déplacement dans l'atmosphère, ou en apposition avec des termes concrets. Ainsi, on dira indifféremment «polluant aéroporté» ou «polluant atmosphérique», mais on ne pourrait pas dire «transport aéroporté» pour «transport atmosphérique».

aéroporté : Ce terme, emprunté à la terminologie militaire, n'est pas encore vraiment implanté dans les autres domaines. Nous ne pouvons pas en recommander l'usage sans restriction.

The electromagnetic radiation, caused by natural electrical disturbances in the atmosphere, which interferes with radio systems.

Atmospherics are heard as a quasi-steady background of crackling noise (static) on certain radio frequencies, such as those used to broadcast AM radio signals. Since any acceleration of electric charge leads to emission of electromagnetic radiation, and since the several processes involved in propagation of lightning lead to very large charge accelerations, the lightning channel acts like a huge transmitter, sending out radiation with frequencies of the order of 10 kHz.

Bruit de fond. On constate également que jusqu'aux bandes UHF, les ondes propagent de nombreux parasites et bruits divers qui se superposent aux signaux. Cela commence dans les longues ondes (LW ou AM) sujettes aux parasites atmosphériques (éclairs, etc), cela s'étend aux VHF sensibles aux aurores et aux traînées d'ionisation des météores pour s'atténuer vers 500 MHz environ. Il faut donc monter en fréquence pour s'abstraire de ces problèmes.

parasites atmosphériques; atmosphériques : lorsque ces termes sont utilisés au singulier (parasite atmosphérique; atmosphérique), ils désignent «une onde électromagnétique» et non pas «l'ensemble des ondes électromagnétiques» résultant de décharges électriques (éclairs) dans l'atmosphère.
