Le glucose et d'autres effecteurs agissent à plusieurs niveaux sur la production d'insuline par la cellule B de l'îlot de Langerhans. La transcription du gène de l'insuline et la stabilité du messager sont augmentées, alors que la sécrétion est précocement stimulée. La transduction du signal glucose semble se faire par l'intermédiaire du métabolisme glycolytique et de l'accumulation d'ATP. Ce dernier composé entraîne la fermeture des canaux K + dépendants del'ATP, et ainsi une dépolarisation membranaire qui provoque l'ouverture des canaux Ca 2 + dépendants du voltage.
