La disquette musicale est née. Il y a longtemps que la disquette a pris le pas sur la cassette pour stocker les données sur micro-ordinateur. Elle s'attaque maintenant au marché de la haute fidélité : la firme américaine Compusonics vient en effet de commercialiser le premier lecteur de disquette hi-fi stéréo. Chaque disquette de 5 1/4 pouces peut déjà contenir l'équivalent d'un 33 tours grâce à un revêtement d'oxyde métallique spécialement développé pour augmenter la densité : chaque pouce linéaire peut ainsi contenir jusqu'à 30.000 bits d'informations, la musique étant évidemment codée sous forme numérique. Ce codage fait d'ailleurs appel à une technique développée par Texas Instruments pour la synthèse de la parole.
