La spondylarthrite ankylosante (ou pelvispondylite rhumatismale) est un rhumatisme inflammatoire touchant la colonne vertébrale (ou atteinte axiale) et parfois les articulations périphériques (arthrites) ainsi que l'insertion des tendons (ou enthèses). […] Il existe trois signes rhumatologiques majeurs : l'atteinte axiale, l'atteinte des articulations périphériques et l'atteinte de l'insertion des tendons. L'atteinte axiale désigne l'inflammation des ligaments de la colonne vertébrale, des articulations sacro-iliaques (articulations situées dans les fesses entre l'os iliaque et le sacrum) et de la partie antérieure de la cage thoracique (articulations sterno-costales).
