BACK AZIMUTH [2 records]

Record 1 2021-01-19

English

Subject field(s)
  • Radar, Radio Guidance and Goniometry
DEF

A projection of the azimuth from the origin to the opposite side of the azimuth circle.

CONT

A back azimuth is calculated by adding 180° to the azimuth when the azimuth is less than 180°, or by subtracting 180° from the azimuth if it is more than 180°. For example, if an azimuth is 320°, the back azimuth would be 320° - 180° = 140°. If the azimuth is 30°, the back azimuth would be 180° + 30° = 210°.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Radar, radioguidage et radiogoniométrie
CONT

A bearing along the reverse direction of a line.

CONT

Using your compass, take your bearing of one of the known positions and mark it down. Repeat this operation until all bearings have been taken. Change these forward bearings to reciprocal or back bearings by adding or substracting 180 degrees. These bearings will be magnetic bearings.

OBS

reciprocal bearing: term officially approved by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).
