Le principe génétique du rétrocroisement est très simple. Une fois un croisement complété, l'hybride F1 et celui des générations suivantes sont croisés de façon récurrente à l'un des parents; la contribution génétique de l'autre parent (le donneur) est ainsi réduite de moitié à chaque génération et devient éventuellement limitée au seul caractère sélectionné. Le rétrocroisement permet de conserver le caractère recherché du parent donneur par sélection.
