A method of irrigation in which water is made to cover the surface of the land to a considerable depth and remains for a considerable period, after which so much of it as has not soaked in is drawn off, leaving the land ready for the growing of crops.

CONT

In flood irrigation, the land is divided into compartments with fairly flat surfaces, and the water is run over the entire area.

OBS

"Flood irrigation" is called "back flooding" when water is released to flow toward the low places.

Irrigation par submersion. Lorsque la pente naturelle est nulle ou presque, le ruissellement devient impossible. Un débit supérieur à la perméabilité du sol devient nécessaire pour conduire l'eau à l'extrémité des parcelles. L'eau s'accumule alors en une nappe épaisse qui s'infiltre peu à peu. Plusieurs variantes sont possibles : les bassins fermés par des levées [...] Les cuvettes reliées à des canaux [...] Enfin les rigoles d'infiltration que l'on remplit d'eau en vue d'une lente infiltration, sont un système d'arrosage que l'on peut rattacher à l'irrigation par «infiltration» ou «à la raie».

Irrigation de surface : [...] L'irrigation par submersion se pratique en terrain plat dans des bassins, entourés de diguettes, que l'on remplit sur une hauteur correspondant à la dose d'arrosage. L'eau pénètre dans le sol par infiltration verticale. Le riz est la culture type ainsi irriguée, bien que sur la majeure partie du cycle végétatif l'arrosage ne soit pas discontinu mais permanent. Ce n'est que peu avant la récolte que les rizières sont mises à sec [...]
