Fabriqué pour l'Airbus A340, le BYDU est un amortisseur de lacet mécanique de secours qui doit entrer en action en cas de panne des commandes de vol électriques de l'avion. Alimenté par les circuits hydrauliques principaux de l'avion, le BYDU produit sa propre énergie électrique nécessaire à l'asservissement et au déplacement du levier qui, au travers d'une boîte à ressorts, actionne la gouverne de direction. Complètement autonome, le BYDU assure la stabilité de l'avion en lacet lorsque celui-ci est piloté en roulis.
