It was Bechdel’s modest proposal for assessing how well a given film represented its female characters, and it went like so: Do you, movie, feature two or more named women? Do they talk to each other? About something besides a guy? If so, then congratulations! You have passed the Bechdel test.

Dans sa procédure comme dans son principe, le test de Bechdel est d’une simplicité biblique. Prenez n’importe quel film, et soumettez-le à trois questions. Ce film comporte-t-il au moins deux personnages féminins identifiables par un nom? Ces deux femmes se parlent-elles? Se parlent-elles d’autre chose que d’un homme? Cela a l’air trivial, mesquin voire vraiment trop facile, mais les candidats susceptibles de réussir ce test, ce qui suppose de répondre affirmativement aux trois questions posées, sont beaucoup plus rares qu’on ne l’imaginerait spontanément.
