Established 3 Feb 1958, The Hague, on signature of the Treaty of Union by representatives of Belgium, Luxembourg, Netherlands; Treaty came into force 1 Nov 1960. Belgium and the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg had been linked, since 1921, by the Belgian-Luxembourg Economic Union (BLEU, no. 01463), which still exists within the Benelux Union. The political initiative to bring together the economies of the Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg, taken during Workd War II, and which eventually led to the economic integration of these countries, had been started with the adoption of a Monetary Agreement, 21 Oct 1943, London, a Customs Union Treaty, 5 Sep 1944, London, and the setting up of Benelux Customs Union (inactive), 1 Jan 1948. Statutes registered in UNTS 1/11096. Aims Develop closer economic links among the 3 member countries by ensuring free circulation of persons, goods, capital and services; follow a coordinated policy in economic, financial and social fields in order to reach the optimum level of employment and the highest standard of life compatible with monetary stability, follow a coordinated policy aimed at the harmonious development of the intraborder regions, if useful in an enlarged setting with other neighbouring countries.
