This factsheet describes the development of sediment assessment tools for the near-shore areas of the Great Lakes of North America. Two types of biological sediment assessment tools, developed by the National Water Research Institute and Ontario Region of Environment Canada, are described: biological guidelines for the assessment of freshwater sediment based on community-based criteria, or the BEnthic Assessment of SedimenT (BEAST) bioassay guidelines based on toxicity scores that compare normal bioassay responses for sediments from reference sites to responses for sediments from sites of concern. These tools are recommended for the assessment of sediment in harbours and embayments for possible remediation, and for assessing sediment removed in navigational or other dredging projects. 1, record 1, English, - Benthic%20Assessment%20of%20Sediment

Cette fiche d'information rend compte de la mise au point d'outils d'évaluation des sédiments aux endroits proches du rivage dans les Grands Lacs de l'Amérique du Nord. Deux types d'outils biologiques d'évaluation des sédiments, créés par l'Institut national de recherche sur les eaux et la région de l'Ontario d'Environnement Canada, sont décrits ici : recommandations biologiques pour l'évaluation des sédiments d'eau douce en fonction de critères basés sur les communautés ou de l'évaluation des sédiments benthiques (BEAST); recommandations pour les bioessais basés sur les cotes de toxicité pour comparer les réactions normales obtenues lors des bioessais sur les sédiments provenant d'emplacements de contrôle aux réactions produites par les sédiments provenant d'emplacements inquiétants.
