Il est des cas où le fait de s'être engagé dans une activité comportementale contraire à son intime conviction entraîne une auto-persuasion. Les sujets qui argumentent en faveur d'une position contraire à la leur auraient, pour bien jouer leur rôle, mentalement fait passer au premier plan les arguments en faveur de la position à défendre, ce qui, par un biais d'examen (anglais : «Biased Scanning») entraîne un affaiblissement des arguments en faveur de leur propre position.
