The Border Infrastructure Fund was implemented to improve the flow of people and goods at border crossings. The fund provides up to 50 percent federal funding to support eligible projects for investments in physical infrastructure, transportation system infrastructure and improved analytical capacity at the largest surface border crossings between Canada and the United States, as well and several other crossing points in Canada. Transport Canada is the federal delivery partner for this program.

Iron formation that shows marked banding, generally of iron-rich minerals and chert of fine-grained quartz.

Banded iron formations (BIF)... form one of the great mineral treasures. Besides the term BIF, these rocks are known in different continents under the terms itabarite, jaspillite, hematite-quartzite and specularite. They occur in stratigraphical units hundreds of metres thick and hundreds or even thousands of kilometres in lateral extent. ... Banded iron formation is characterized by its fine layering. The layers are generally 0.5-3 cm thick... The layering consists of silica layers ... alternating with layers of iron minerals.

Il s'est formé au Précambrien, il y a environ 2,5 milliards d'années, d'importants dépôts sédimentaires, très riches en oxyde de fer, principalement en hématite : ce sont les «formations de fer rubanées» de nos jours principales réserves mondiales de fer.

Tout d'abord, l'oxygène reste prisonnier de l'hydrosphère et oxyde tous les éléments réducteurs qu'elle contient, fer et soufre notamment. C'est la période de formation des minerais de fer rubanés (entre 3 700 et 1700 Ma), alternance de couches de silice et d'oxyde de fer aujourd'hui exploités par exemple en Mauritanie, et qui renferment les premiers organismes connus.
