Le mode de représentation BCD (Binary Coded Decimal = Décimal Codé Binaire) est fondé sur un principe simple : on doit coder les dix chiffres décimaux de 0 à 9, ce qui exige l'utilisation de 4 bits. (Trois bits ne permettraient de coder que 2³ combinaisons. Quatre bits permettent de coder 16 combinaisons. On utilise donc quatre bits pour coder les dix chiffres du système décimal).
