Black chalcedony is a microcrystalline or cryptocrystalline quartz. Chalcedony can have different colors like greenish blue, brownish orange, yellowish green, and greenish blue. Pure black is rare.

black onyx: incorrect name for black single colored agate or chalcedony which is usually colored artificially.

Parfois, lorsque l'on pense acheter de l'onyx, on nous donne souvent, par escroquerie ou simple ignorance, des pierres de calcédoine teintes en noir. Il est cependant facile de distinguer ces matériaux en les plaçant devant une lumière forte : l'onyx naturel présente une légère translucidité brune, tandis que la calcédoine noire est totalement opaque.
