The Brier is the emblem of the supremacy of curling in Canada. The first Canadian Curling Championship, at the time only for men, took place in 1927, in Toronto. The name "Brier" comes from Macdonald Tobacco, the cigarette company who was sponsoring the championship at the start. The name is also a reference to a smoking pipe. 4, record 2, English, - Brier

Nevertheless, none of the sources consulted links the term "Brier" to the "World Men's Curling Championship," all of them considering that it is exclusively associated with the "Canadian Men's Curling Championship.". 4, record 2, English, - Brier
