Près de la surface du sol, les couches solfifères s'altèrent et donnent une sorte de gypse caverneux qui porte le nom local de "briscale": il est produit par l'action de l'acide sulfurique, résultant de l'oxydation du soufre, sur le calcaire. Le briscale permet de suivre sur le terrain l'extension des gisements.
