Le photographe peut obtenir des tons plus foncés dans certaines zones d'une photographie au moyen d'une technique appelée la surexposition sélective. Pendant une partie du temps d'exposition, il interpose un carton, au centre duquel on a percé un trou, entre le papier photographique et le faisceau lumineux que laisse filtrer l'objectif de l'agrandisseur à travers le négatif. La zone non protégée, recevant davantage de lumière, noircit plus que le reste.
