Les vases argileuses, marneuses et marno-calcaires montrent, lors de leur sédimentation, une tendance marquée à l'élaboration de nodules calcaires.

Les schistes ardoisiers ou ardoises sont [...] très fissiles. [...] La présence de nodules de calcaire ou de cubes de pyrite de fer diminue leur valeur. Les premiers se dissolvent peu à peu, les seconds donnent des oxydes de fer et de l'acide sulfurique qui facilitent la désagrégation des ardoises.
