Soon after they reached the Pacific Coast, however, both the Canadian Northern and Grand Trunk Pacific got into financial difficulties which forced the federal government to step in. The Canadian Northern became bankrupt in 1916 and, in 1918, the federal government took it over. Grand Trunk Pacific became bankrupt shortly thereafter and, in 1920 it, too was taken over. Peu de temps après avoir atteint la côte du Pacifique cependant, le Canadian Northern et le Grand Trunk Pacific devaient connaître des difficultés financières qui provoquèrent l'intervention du gouvernement fédéral. Le Canadian Northern faisait faillite en 1916 et le gouvernement fédéral en prenait le contrôle en 1918. Le Grand Trunk Pacific en faisait autant peu de temps après et était lui aussi pris en charge par le gouvernement.
