The impermeable rock overlying an oil or gas reservoir that tends to prevent migration of the reservoir fluids from the reservoir.

CONT

Oil and gas become trapped in the subsurface where there is a barrier formed by impermeable rocks, such as well-cemented lithologies, mudrock and evaporite beds. These impermeable lithologies are known as cap rocks. The hydrocarbons will find their way around the cap-rock barrier unless there is some form of hydrocarbon trap that prevents further upward migration.

OBS

All cap rocks are impermeable, therefore making the terms "impermeable cap rock" and "impervious cap rock" redundant.

The bedrock which underlies the overburden is an important consideration and may control the contaminant migration pathway. For example, a porous sandstone formation may decrease travel times to the biosphere, particularly if the facility [an abandoned mine used for the disposal of low-level radioactive wastes] is in a groundwater recharge zone.

P. ex., un affleurement peut être constitué de roche en place.

Une nappe est captive lorsque son niveau (surface piézométrique) est au-dessus du toit imperméable de la formation géologique qui la contient. Une nappe est libre quand il n'y a pas de toit imperméable.

L'imperméable est un terrain moins perméable que l'aquifère et qui limite la nappe par son imperméabilité relative. Le mur imperméable est sous la nappe, le toit imperméable au-dessus.
