The epiglottis (cartilago epiglottica) is a thin lamella of fibrocartilage of a yellowish color, shaped like a leaf, and projecting obliquely upward behind the root of the tongue, in front of the entrance to the larynx.

Lamelle fibrocartilagineuse impaire, souple, entrant dans la constitution du larynx. Pendant la déglutition, elle aide à détourner les aliments de la trachée, accomplissant ainsi une partie des fonctions de clapet du larynx.

L'instrument appelé spéculum laryngien [...] permet d'examiner aisément l'épiglotte, les replis aryténo-épiglottiques, l'ouverture supérieure du larynx, les portions de l'arrière-gorge placées à ce niveau et l'état de ces parties, soit directement, soit dans le miroir dont sont munis certains des modèles du spéculum laryngien.
