Les ponts en fonte ont pris naissance en Angleterre, à la fin du XVIIIe s.; d'assez nombreux ouvrages ont été réalisés avec ce matériau (...) La fonte résiste mal à la traction et les structures principales étaient donc constituées d'arcs; d'autre part, le matériau était fragile et des cassures se manifestaient, de sorte que de nombreux ponts en fonte ont dû être remplacés.
