Caviomorpha was named by Wood and Patterson (1955). It is extant. It was reranked as the suborder Caviomorpha by MacFadden et al. (1993); it was revalidated by Nowak (1999); it was reranked as the unranked clade Caviomorpha by Huchon and Douzery (2001). It was assigned to Rodentia by MacFadden et al. (1993); and to Hystricognathi by Carroll (1988), Nowak (1999) and Huchon and Douzery (2001).

Le sous-ordre des Caviomorphes a été intégré au sous-ordre des Hystricognathes en 1988. Ce dernier, qui appartient à l'ordre des rongeurs, comprend entre autres les chinchillas.

CONT

Les Caviomorphes sont des rongeurs vivant pour la plupart en Amérique du Sud. Ce sous-ordre comprend le plus gros rongeur du monde, le capybara ou le minuscule chinchilla, connu pour sa très belle fourrure. Le cobaye (Cavia aperea), l'un des rongeurs domestiques les plus répandus de la planète, fait également partie des Caviomorphes.
