The cultivated tomato is one of nine species belonging to the genus Lycopersicon. Although consumption is limited largely to cultivars of Lycopersicon esculentum, fruits of the wild variety cerasiforme and the closely related Lycopersicon pimpinellifolium are grown to a limited extent.
