A crystal foreign to the rock in which it is found.

CONT

Large crystals can be enclosed in a fine groundmass by other mechanisms, e.g., ash particles that happen to be single crystals can fall into a lava as it flows. When the large crystals and the groundmass come from separate sources, the former are called xenocrysts.
