Les chondres sont des sphérules de quelques micromètres à quelques millimètres de diamètre, sur l'origine desquelles les opinions les plus variées subsistent : condensat primaire, condensat provoqué par des décharges électriques dans la nébuleuse primitive, refusion de matériel cristallisé à l'occasion de phénomènes volcaniques ou de chocs entre des corps célestes. Il s'agit, en tout cas, de gouttes silicatées passées par l'état liquide - peut-être par surfusion - et refroidies très rapidement en cristallisant partiellement ou totalement.
