Hay tres barreras principales para prevenir la liberación de los productos de la fisión. La primera barrera es el revestimiento metálico. Las píldoras de combustible de uranio se ubican dentro de este revestimiento y se acomodan en patrones específicos en el centro. Durante la operación normal, los productos de la fisión son atrapados dentro de los cilindros de combustible, pero, si se acumula demasiado calor en el centro, el revestimiento metálico del combustible se puede romper o fisurar y se liberan productos de fisión como gases nobles, yodo y cesio radiactivos.
