Récupérant les idées des professionnels, depuis le milieu des années 1970, les amateurs disposent de procédés chimiques leur permettant de réduire le seuil de sensibilité des émulsions et d'accroître la sensibilité de leurs films aux faibles lumières. Il s'agit du traitement cryogénique (cold camera) mais aujourd'hui dépassé, et l'hypersensibilisation au gaz H/N (forming gaz).
