Les termes les plus souvent controversés sont le colloque, le symposium et le séminaire. Il convient de souligner que le colloque et le symposium sont des réunions d'étude entre collègues : le premier est multidisciplinaire, le deuxième unidisciplinaire. Dans la pratique, les deux termes sont trop souvent employés comme synonymes ou dans une acception opposée à la leur.
